For many of us, stepping into the store wasn’t just about shopping; it was about tapping into our inner artist, getting inspired, and being part of a community of makers. So, when we heard that JoAnn Fabrics was closing its doors, it felt like we’d lost more than just a craft store. We lost a home, a place of inspiration, and a familiar, comforting space. And it’s not just us – it’s also the employees who’ve become an integral part of our community.

The Loss to Creatives

My daughter, Rio, opened her Etsy shop “Rio’s Renditions“ on February 24, 2008. She had her Hello Kitty sewing machine (a gift from my mom) and designs for hats she’d drawn herself. The only thing she didn’t have was the fabric and supplies she needed to turn those sketches into something real. That’s where JoAnn Fabrics came in. It was the place she could always count on for the perfect fleece, the right colors, and all the other little things that brought her creations to life.

Even though she’s stocked up on her go-to materials for now, at some point, her shop will feel the effects of JoAnn’s closing too. It’s not just a loss of supplies; it’s the loss of a place that helped build her business and fuel her passion.

The Impact on Employees and the Community

Over the years, Rio and I have made countless trips to our local JoAnn store. We’ve walked out with miles of fabric and yarn for our projects. The employees always took a genuine interest in what we were creating. “What are you making with all that fabric?” they’d ask Rio, and she’d tell them about her hats and her Etsy shop. When I’d buy yarn, they’d want to know what I was going to make next.

We’re really going to miss those friendly, hard-working folks. They weren’t just employees; they were a part of our creative journey. They offered tips, encouragement, and always made us feel welcome. Many of them have been there for years, and with the store closing, they’re not just losing a job – they’re losing a community they’ve been a part of. It’s a tough change for all of us.

Looking Ahead

JoAnn Fabrics was more than just a store – it was a gathering place for us, the local creatives. But here’s the thing: creativity doesn’t depend on a store. The crafting community is a resourceful one, and we’ll find a way to keep going. My advice? Start researching the brands of fabric, thread, and yarn you use the most, and begin planning how you’ll move forward with your craft. The creative spirit isn’t bound by walls; it’s about what we make of it.

Until next time,

~ Belle

In a world that often feels like it’s rushing by, JoAnn Fabrics was a steady presence – a place where creativity thrived, DIY projects came to life, and anyone with a passion for crafting could find exactly what they needed all in one spot.
