Cotton & Acrylic Yarn Explained

I use both cotton and acrylic yarn for most of the items I make. My husband wanted to know what the difference between them is, so I thought I’d share the information with you as well.

Cotton yarn is a natural fiber that is breathable, soft, durable and absorbent. Cotton is a better choice for wearables in the summer due to these qualities. Cotton yarn is great for kitchen and bathroom items in addition to clothing. Cotton items are easy to maintain as they are machine washable and dryable. I use both 100% cotton and 100% mercerized cotton. The mercerized cotton has gone through a chemical process that gives it a shiny appearance and the colors are a bit more vibrant.

Acrylic yarn is a man-made synthetic fiber. If you are allergic to wool, this yarn is a great alternative. It is hypoallergenic and is less likely to cause irritation or an allergic reaction. This yarn is less breathable than cotton and items may feel warmer, especially in the summer months. Acrylic yarn is durable and easy to maintain as it is also machine washable and dryable on low heat setting. Acrylic yarn is great for blankets, pillows, and other decorative items in addition to wearable items.

When purchasing a product, be sure to read the description to see which yarn is used. Cotton hats will be a bit cooler to wear during the spring and summer months, while acrylic ones will be warmer in the fall and winter. All of the above products are available now in my shop!

I hope this helps in understanding the difference. If you have questions, please reach out to me.

Until next time,

~Belle
