Crocheting Hearts for The Peyton Heart Project: Spreading Love One Stitch at a Time

In a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming, small acts of kindness can make a big difference. That’s where The Peyton Heart Project ( https://thepeytonheartproject.org/ ) comes in. This inspiring initiative uses handcrafted hearts to spread messages of hope and kindness to people around the globe. I started crocheting hearts in 2023 and still make some throughout the year. I love that they can be made in a matter of minutes, especially if I’m working on a big project and need a break from it. For my 60th birthday, I made 60 hearts to give out.

What Is The Peyton Heart Project?

The Peyton Heart Project was formed in 2015 and  is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about suicide prevention and mental health issues. Named in memory of Peyton James, a 13-year-old boy who tragically died by suicide in 2014, the project encourages conversations about mental health and promotes kindness. Volunteers craft small hearts with inspirational messages attached and leave them in public places for others to find. These little hearts are a beacon of hope, reminding people that they are not alone.

Why Crochet Hearts?

Crocheting hearts for this project is a wonderful way to combine your passion for crafting with a cause that truly makes a difference. Each heart you create is a tangible symbol of love, compassion, and hope. Plus, crocheted hearts are durable, colorful, and endlessly customizable, making them perfect for this project. Getting Started: Materials and Patterns

To crochet hearts for The Peyton Heart Project, you’ll need a few basic materials:

  • Yarn: Any type of yarn works, but acrylic is a great choice because it’s affordable, easy to work with, and holds its shape well. Use bright, cheerful colors to make your hearts stand out. Please do not use black yarn as it can sometimes be seen to represent anger, grief, or sadness. I find it’s a great way to use up scrap yarns I have from other projects.
  • Hook: Choose a hook size appropriate for your yarn, I normally use a 5mm (H-8) since I mainly use acrylic yarn. Smaller hooks will create tighter, more compact hearts.
  • Scissors and a Tapestry Needle: For finishing and weaving in ends.
  • Printable Tags: The Peyton Heart Project provides downloadable tags with uplifting messages that you can attach to your hearts.

Need a pattern? Here’s a simple one to get you started:

Basic Crochet Heart Pattern:

  1. Start with a magic circle.
  2. Chain 2, then work the following stitches into the circle: 3 treble crochets, 3 double crochets, 1 treble crochet, 3 double crochets, 3 treble crochets.
  3. Chain 2 and slip stitch into the circle to close the heart.
  4. Pull the magic circle tight and fasten off.

Feel free to experiment with different patterns and sizes to create a variety of hearts.

Attaching the Tags

Once your hearts are complete, print out the tags from The Peyton Heart Project’s website https://thepeytonheartproject.org/tags/ . Each tag includes a motivational message and information about the initiative. Use a small piece of yarn or ribbon to tie the tag securely to your heart.

Spreading the Love

Now comes the fun part: distributing your hearts! I put mine in small zipper bags to protect them from weather and the elements, and I have put mine on hooks in bathrooms when I travel. Here are some other ideas.

Leave them in public places where they’re likely to be found, such as:

  • Park benches
  • Library shelves
  • Coffee shop tables
  • Community bulletin boards

You can also coordinate with local schools, hospitals, or community centers to share your hearts with those who need a little extra kindness.
